It was and often still is that people were closeted. There was no difference in people, just in what they did about their sexual identity. I saw a wonderful YouTube video about Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Rope". It was about two gay guys but Hitchcock had to get it past the censors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR_08mjrDQs
