Well, let me give you the recipe. Start with selfish greedy men who wish to control their congregations to bilk them of every cent they have. Let these men, choose whichever Bible passages are in their best interests but not the best interests of their congregants and definitely not any passages that Jesus spoke because those go against these men's desires. Then, place people who fear going to hell in those congregations and tell them that if they don't do what the wolves in sheep's clothing (these pastors) want, they will go to hell. Spread this out over many generations. While seeking even greater power and wealth, cozy up to politicians who will go along with your greed by donating to their campaigns and promising massive votes for them. Stir it all together, bake it for a few more years and voilà. You have the final result of a country on the brink of disaster and possibly the rest of the world as well while all the time calling it Christianity.
